Lorna's Gilded Signwriting Kit
Discover the traditional art of signwriting
If you’ve ever looked at gorgeous shop window signage or a beautiful wedding sign and wished you could recreate something similar, now’s your chance! With Lorna’s Gilded Signwriting Kit, which comes complete with a tutorial video from signwriter Lorna Dunn, you’ll learn how to paint and gild a small sign project.
About your tutor and kit
A full-time signwriter and hand lettering enthusiast, Lorna has over eight years’ experience working with many independent businesses across Leicester, as well as big name brands like Mercedes Benz. An average sized window takes her about 4 1/2 hours to complete and no two designs are ever the same.
In your kit, you’ll receive materials supplied by A.S Handover, hand makers of the finest professional quality brushes. When we say they’re the best of the best, we’re not joking. One of the company’s loyal customers is none other than the Royal Household, with A.S Handover holding the Royal Warrant for supply of brushes, paints and gilding materials to Her Majesty The Queen.

- 5 gold leaf transfer sheets (1 book)
- 1 pounce wheel
- 1 chisel writer #5 (vegan brush)
- 45ml neatsfoot oil

- 1 whiting powder in a muslin pouch
- 45ml oil based size (1-2 hour) (glue for the gold leaf)
- 1 gold duster brush
- 4 paper pots (for mixing)
- 2 lollipop sticks
- 1 stabilo all surface pencil in white
The only thing you’ll need to provide is a rag for cleaning, and a little turps to clean your brush.
How is the tutorial video structured?
Once you’ve purchased your kit we’ll email you a link to the video which you can stream via our website.
First, Lorna will show you what materials are in the kit and explain what they’re used for. She’ll get you to flatten your brush on paper, a technique that helps create sharp edges and is ideal for when you’re later filling in shapes. You can then move on to painting on the back of one of your perspex sheets, a different and much smoother surface.
With the basics mastered, it’s time to design your project with a pencil and paper, before transferring it onto a perspex sheet. You can then apply the glue for the gold leaf transfer, known as size, and the transfer itself and then let it dry for 40 minutes. Last but not least, paint the outer edges of your design and there you have your first signwriting project complete!
More on your tutor, Lorna Dunn
Lorna is originally from Arnseby in South Leicestershire and started signwriting for a local pub eight years ago. She kept up her lettering after leaving that job and soon developed a following on Instagram. After sharing examples of her work, it wasn't long before Lorna was inundated with enquiries from people asking if she could create something for them. The rest is history and Lorna's signwriting business, Lesser Than Three, continues to go from strength to strength. You can follow Lorna on Instagram and buy her work on her website.
