Learn to create stunning digital drawings

Forget the sketchpad, pencils and charcoal sticks. All you need in Mik’s Digital Life-Drawing Class is your smartphone or tablet device, as you’ll be using the professional drawing and painting app, Autodesk Sketchbook. Easy to use and ideal for those on the go, the app lets you quickly sketch ideas and create beautiful illustrations. It gives you instant access to all the artist’s tools you could ever need, including pencils, inks, markers and over 190 customisable brushes!

In your artist tutorial video, you’ll first get familiar with the app’s slick interface, before using Autodesk Sketchbook to create your very own masterpiece in a tutor-led life-drawing class.

About your tutor and class

If there's anyone you want to learn life-drawing from, it's our brilliant tutor, Mik Godley. He’s spent over forty years practising the art form and has over thirty years’ experience teaching it. Mik specialises in teaching life-drawing to pre-degree students and believes it’s the best way to teach budding visual artists like photographers, architects and even shoe designers to actively look and study their subject.

In his tutorial video, Mik will guide you through the basics of Autodesk Sketchbook. He'll then deliver a life-drawing lesson where you can put your newfound knowledge of Autodesk Sketchbook into action. Need another look at how the app works? Just press pause or rewind the video – the beauty of this art class is that you can take it entirely at your own pace.

More on your tutor, Mik Godley

After years of boredom at a grammar school, as Mik put it, his artistic education first began when he went to a small art school in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. It was there that he fell in love with life-drawing, taking classes, staging a small exhibition and later being asked to return and teach the art form.

As well as completing a masters degree at Nottingham Trent University, Mik was part of the team that initiated Primary, the city’s artist-led contemporary visual arts organisation. They prioritise creative research, provide studios and residencies to artists, and run a free public programme of exhibitions and events.

We’re thrilled that Mik will be staging an exhibition with us at Attenborough Art Centre later this year. ‘Considering Silesia’ will feature several of his drawings using Sketchbook and other apps, and will be open from Monday 7 June until Friday 3 September 2021.
