Create standout artwork with lino printmaking

Bold and powerful, lino printing is a block printing technique that involves creating hard lines through carving lino, flat areas of colour and high contrast between paper and ink. The possibilities of what you can create are endless, especially when you’re taught by a seasoned printmaker like Ruthie Hudson. With her tutorial video and lino printing kit, you’ll learn how to use your materials, experiment with different lino printing techniques, and most importantly – have fun!

About your tutor and kit

Ruthie is a full-time artist and printmaker, making linocuts using an old cast iron lithograph press that dates back to 1856. A beautiful piece of machinery, it can be slightly temperamental – but that’s no bad thing. Ruthie loves the fact that she can produce unique and clearly handmade pieces of art every time. She takes inspiration from her previous career in high-end fashion and interior magazine production, as well as her life as a mother, living in a fast-paced digital world, song lyrics and quotes from books.

In Ruthie's tutorial video, she'll explain what tools you're using and how to use them. This includes the lino cutting tool, which comes with five blades for different cutting techniques like circular motions, deep grooves and cross hatching. She’ll then teach you how to plan your composition, prepare the drawing for cutting and transfer it onto the lino (you'll use three different types – Japanese, soft, and grey). Once your print is cut, you'll move onto the final step, printing and pressing using the ink and a roller.

More on your tutor, Ruthie Hudson

When it comes to lino printing, Ruthie knows what she’s talking about. She’s primarily self-taught but has a strong educational background, with a BA degree in Fine Art, History of Art and English Literature from Newcastle University. She went on to study Art at the Chelsea School of Art and has also completed several workshops at the Leicester Print Workshop.

When we asked Ruthie about a piece of work that means a lot to her, she told us about ‘Rider on the Storm’, a print she made for her best friend who was battling cancer. Her friend sadly passed away in 2020 and for every print Ruthie sells, she donates £5 to Cancer Research.

Fancy seeing Ruthie’s work in person? She often has pop-ups and open days at her studio in Ketton, Lincolnshire. Alternatively, you can discover Ruthie’s work and process on her Instagram and buy her art on her website.
