Cast your very own 3D sculpture using Jesmonite

You don’t need to be a professional artist to create a beautiful sculpture. You simply need the right materials and a great teacher, which is exactly what you’ll get with this kit. In artist Yambe’s tutorial video, she’ll show you how to cast in Jesmonite, a water-based resin system made up of mineral resin powder and acrylic liquid. Instead of working with a rubber mould, Yambe will get you creating your very own simple, one-use mould from the cardboard your kit comes in. Why? Because it’s kinder to the planet and proves that by using your imagination, you can create something special out of very little. Keep reading to find out more about our Jesmonite casting kit and how we can teach you how to mould your own designs.

About your tutor and kit

Musical, analytical and inquisitive, Yambe’s creative practise takes inspiration from the evolution of human consciousness in living and artificial beings. Her artwork takes the form of immersive sculpture installations and virtual simulations. She has collaborated with everyone from composers to creative technologists and even scientists!

Your Jesmonite casting kit

Yambe will show you how to make your 3D mould and will then cast two types of Jesmonite sculpture – a ‘positive’, which is a solid sculpture, and a ‘negative’, which is hollow like a bowl. The great thing about the Jesmonite casting kit is you can achieve loads of colours and effects with it – just be sure to wear some old clothes as it can get quite messy.

Who’s the kit for?

Yambe’s kit and tutorial video is suitable for creators at every stage of their sculpting journey. If you’ve ever fancied making something for your home like a coaster, bowl or trinket dish, Yambe will introduce you to the materials you need, how to use them and why they’re used in a certain way too.

What’s in the kit?

  • 1kg Jesmonite base powder
  • 500ml Jesmonite resin
  • 10g pigment: yellow oxide
  • 10g pigment: blue
  • 45ml thixotrope
  • 20x10cm fiberglass sheet
  • 1 roll duct tape
  • 4 biodegradable, disposable gloves
  • 1 triangle stencil
  • 1 paint brush
  • 1 facemask
  • 1/4 sheet 240 grit sandpaper
  • 1 jar of Vaseline

While the Jesmonite you’ll be using is 100% non-toxic and completely safe to use, we’ve still included protective equipment in your kit, like gloves and a facemask, for peace of mind.

The only items not included that you may want to have to hand are a pair of scissors and a kitchen scale.

How is the tutorial video structured?

Once you’ve purchased your kit, we’ll email you a link to the video which you can stream via our website.

More on your tutor, Yambe Tam

Yambe was first introduced to mould making and Jesmonite in 2018 at London’s Royal College of Art, where she earned her MA in Painting. She later took a course to gain experience with the craft form and then introduced it into her work in 2019. As well as being an artist, Yambe is also an ordained Zen Buddhist and a pianist.

She will be exhibiting at FACT Liverpool at the end of August, and will open a solo exhibition with us in Gallery 2 of Attenborough Arts Centre later this year (dates to be confirmed). You can find out more on Yambe's website.
